The local's favourite festival venues

There are over 500 venues in the Edinburgh Fringe alone! But where do the locals like to go?

Where's my favourite festival venue? It's got to be George Square Garden. Nothing better than having a drink in the sun, surrounded by happy people, waiting for a show to come on at the Spiegeltent.

Assembly George Square Garden

A real hub of activity during the festival, this gorgeous city centre garden is barely used the rest of the year, but comes alive every August. With magical lighting, striking bar areas and fantastic street food, George Square garden is chilled in the day (great with kids), then lively and sociable at night. The atmospheric Spiegeltent Palais du Variété and Piccolo Tent are both based here. Definitely this local's favourite.

Where else in the world do you see a giant inflatable purple cow? And, get to venture inside for a show? A purpose built, unique venue with brilliant atmosphere. Plenty of seating but still with that intimate small venue feel.

The Pleasance Courtyard

The Scotsman called this the 'centre of the cultural universe' and it certainly has to be on everyone's list of destinations during the festival. Good for star spotting, the Pleasance is a cobbled courtyard, usually part of the university but in summer it is taken over by the Fringe. Everyone will come here at some point during the festival and you are almost certain to spot a celebrity or two. There's also a good Kidzone with plenty of activities for the littler ones.
