Welcome to autumn in Edinburgh! From September to November, our magnificent city is awash with amber, scarlet and russet tones.
There is plenty to do over this colourful season. Here's our pick of the best!
The best way to experience autumn is to get out amongst the crisp, golden leaves. Take in the amazing views and look out for Scottish wildlife along the way. Our favourite places to walk in the city include Holyrood Park, the Water of Leith Walkway and the Royal Botanic Gardens. But even a stroll through the city streets is enhanced by the beautiful autumn colours.
Doors Open Days take place during the last weekend in September here in Edinburgh. On these two days of the year, many buildings that are usually closed to the public or charge an admission fee will open their doors for free. This is a wonderful chance to discover Edinburgh's hidden gems.
If you're visiting at Halloween, don't miss the Samhuinn Fire Festival. A dazzling evening event up on Calton Hill, which celebrates the Celtic New Year with fire, drums, acrobatics and immersive theatre. For the wee ones, there's a family-friendly event on the Saturday before Halloween.
Other popular events this autumn include Edinburgh Cocktail Week, Oktoberfest and the Scottish Storytelling Festival. Not forgetting, Edinburgh's fabulous Christmas celebrations get underway from mid-November!
Edinburgh is the perfect city for a theatre or concert break. Some of the biggest shows of the season will be here, such as Mamma Mia!, Annie, We Will Rock You, The King and I, The Rocky Horror Show and Cabaret. There'll be comedy performances from the likes of Eddie Izzard, Frank Skinner, Tim Minchin and Romesh Ranganathan. Plus, concerts by stars including Hozier, Will Young, Tom Walker, Wet Wet Wet and Emeli Sande.
