About Furnace Brook

Furnace Brook knows that nature heals. Furnace Brook is a special place that has evolved from an ecological fishery to an established ecosystem restoration community:

Hosting a Community Farm

Facilitating Rewilding Initiative

Researching Aquatic restoration

Building a regional food network

At Furnace Brook Diane- and Alistair Gould worked for years to establish a lively, biodiverse fishery, where angling and environmental care went hand in hand. Until 2 years ago, Furnace Brook was struck by a severe pollution incident caused by upstream waste dumping.

Rather than wait for someone else to sort it out, Furnace Brook has built an interdisciplinary team of aquatic restoration experts. Together they’ve designed practical, ecological interventions to remove toxins, heavy metals and trace chemicals from the water.

Today, Furnace Brook cleaning the water pollution in their lake serves as a living laboratory for water restoration, developing solutions that could help clean waterways across Britain.

This isn’t just about fixing damage.
It’s about building something better.
Together.

About Lake Down Brewery

Lake Down Brewery is stepping up to help a neighbour.

They host their own fishery and are deeply committed to improving landscapes, water quality and nature recovery. They brew using water from their own spring, and much of the brewery runs on solar power.

While Lake Down’s own lakes are clean as a whistle, they’re motivated to be a positive force for water quality across East Sussex and the UK.
